Elton John named the song he regrets
Elton John, the renowned British rock musician, five-time Grammy Award winner, and one of the world’s most successful artists, has admitted that there is one song he regrets. The song in question is the legendary hit “Crocodile Rock,” which was released back in the 1970s and became one of the defining symbols of his career.
Far Out Magazine reports on this.
It was the song “Crocodile Rock” that helped Elton John establish himself among the world’s superstars. The song quickly became an international hit thanks to its simple and catchy “La-la-la-la-la” chorus.
However, over the years, the artist and his longtime co-writer Bernie Taupin began to view this track with mixed feelings.
According to critics, the problem lies not in the quality of the song, but in the fact that its massive commercial success “overshadowed” the duo’s other, more profound works.
Bernie Taupin has previously spoken openly about his feelings toward “Crocodile Rock.”
“I don’t mind that I wrote it, but it’s not something I’d listen to... I don’t want people to remember me for ‘Crocodile Rock’; I’d rather be remembered for songs like ‘Candle In The Wind’ and ‘Empty Garden’—songs that convey important messages,” the author noted.
Elton John himself has also repeatedly expressed mixed feelings about the song. The singer acknowledges that this track was a major milestone in his career and helped him achieve global fame.
However, the artist admitted that the song’s success eventually began to weigh on him.
“It became a huge hit, but later it became a burden for me,” the musician said.
The song “Crocodile Rock” was released in the UK on October 27, 1972, and in the US on November 20 of the same year. The song served as the lead single for Elton John’s upcoming album.
In 1973, the track topped the U.S. Billboard chart and held the number one spot for three consecutive weeks. The song also received gold and platinum certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America.
In addition, “Crocodile Rock” became Elton John’s first song released as a single on the MCA label. Despite the artist’s own mixed feelings about it, the song remains one of the most famous in his discography and was regularly performed at his concerts.
Earlier, the National Portrait Gallery in London unveiled a new family portrait of Elton John. The photograph features the artist alongside his husband, David Furnish, and their sons, Zachary John and Elijah John.
