Finnish artist Edicti recorded an album about silence and shame — YLE News
In Finland, artist Edicti, whose real name is Miko Pellikka, has presented a new concept album, Toiveuusintoja, about silence, avoiding difficult conversations and returning to familiar things as a way of escaping difficult feelings. The musician hopes that his songs will help start conversations about challenging topics, YLE News reports.
Conversations about feelings
According to 28-year-old Edicti, men communicate with one another, but do not often talk about their own emotions. The impetus for working on the record came from an evening with friends, when one of them suggested moving away from watching music videos and playing video games to talk around the table. Those present included friends who live in other cities or abroad and rarely see each other.
The artist noted that friendships between men are often built around shared activities, meaning deeper conversations may not take place. He also said that he had been learning to show physical closeness with male friends: when he lived with his best friend, they realized that they almost never hugged and decided to do so more often.

Songs about loss and shame
The past year and a half have been difficult for Edicti: there have been many deaths among those close to him. While experiencing grief, he turned to nostalgia — collecting old band T-shirts, watching old films and playing video games more often.
The album includes tracks about empty conversations at family celebrations, silence after death and violence in relationships. Edicti also expressed concern about the spread of hypermasculinity and macho culture in popular social media content. In his view, a narrow idea of masculinity leads to silence and shame, which often prevents people from dealing with other feelings.
Music has already helped the artist establish a conversation with his father. During difficulties in their relationship, he wrote the song Jäänmurtaja, which was included on the previous album Joku, jonka luo palata. Three years ago, Edicti played it for his father, who then cried, hugged his son, and they talked afterward.
