In Ghana, playwright, director and producer James Ebo Whyte, known as Uncle Ebo Whyte, writes, directs and stages a new full-length play every quarter. According to the publication, Whyte studied statistics at the University of Ghana in Legon and independently prepared for professional examinations in accounting and marketing. At the same time, he has no specialized academic education in theatre.
In 1974, Whyte became the artistic director of the J-Theatre group, which mainly staged Christian plays in schools and churches. Between 1974 and 1992, he wrote 17 plays, the first of which was Man Must Live.
The playwright said that his first commercial production incurred losses, while he financed the second by selling a car. The third production broke even, and the fourth was sold.
