President Tinubu congratulates musician King Sunny Ade on his 80th birthday — Premium Times Nigeria
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has congratulated legendary musician Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, known as King Sunny Ade, on his 80th birthday. In a message circulated by Nigeria's State House, Tinubu called the performer a model of musical excellence and a cultural ambassador of the country.
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the president said that King Sunny Ade's creativity, discipline and long-standing dedication to music helped turn the juju genre into a globally recognized element of Nigerian culture.
Contribution to juju music
Tinubu noted the musician's recognizable style, which combines guitar, talking drums and other traditional instruments. According to him, the performer's stage appearances and innovative approach secured him a prominent place in the history of African art and entertainment.
King Sunny Ade was born on September 22, 1946. He began his professional music career in the 1960s and formed the Green Spots band in 1967. He later led African Beats and gained popularity in Nigeria in the 1970s.

International recognition
The musician's international breakthrough came in the early 1980s after he signed with Mango, a label owned by Island Records. The albums “Juju Music,” released in 1982, and “Synchro System” from 1983 introduced international audiences to a blend of Yoruba musical traditions, electric guitars, percussion and talking drums.
“Synchro System” earned King Sunny Ade a Grammy nomination in 1984, making him the first Nigerian artist nominated for the award. The record “Odu” was also nominated in the Best World Music Album category in 1999. The Recording Academy lists the musician as a two-time Grammy nominee.
Tinubu said that King Sunny Ade's music preserved Nigeria's cultural identity, celebrated its traditions and inspired generations of musicians and creative industry representatives. On behalf of his family, the government and the people of Nigeria, the president wished the performer health, wisdom and many more years of life.
