Producer Decap talks about Drums That Knock sample packs — The Verge

Music producer and sound designer Nicholas Piantedosi, known as Decap, created the Drums That Knock series of sample packs, which have been used in recordings across various genres. The producer spoke about his work and tools in a short interview with The Verge.

According to the publication, Decap's work can be heard in tracks by Kendrick Lamar, Olivia Rodrigo, Charli XCX, Freddie Gibbs, Bad Bunny, Mac Miller and BTS. His work was also used in Ludwig Göransson's music for the film “Oppenheimer.”

The Drums That Knock series was launched in 2016 and now has 11 releases. Producer Kenneth Blume, previously known as Kenny Beats, said that Decap changed a million lives with one snare drum sound. Blume has worked, among others, with Denzel Curry, Vince Staples, Rico Nasty, Idles and FKA Twigs.

The producer's tools

Decap named Ableton Live as his most important tool, using the software to bring musical ideas to life. The producer considers a clipper an underrated tool: according to him, a soft clipper can give drums a warm analog sound or make them sound much more powerful.

Decap also still uses the 1998 Boss SP-202 Dr. Sample sampler. Among the things he would like to change about smartphones, the producer named their speakers, as he wants to hear distinct 808 bass on a phone.
