Religious Holiday on June 21 in Ukraine: History, Traditions, and Prayer

On June 21, the church calendar commemorates Saint Julian of Tarsus, the martyr—one of the early Christian saints whose self-sacrifice and steadfastness in the faith have become an example of spiritual devotion for believers.

On June 21, according to the New Julian calendar, the Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Julian of Tarsus, a Christian ascetic of the 3rd–4th centuries, who is considered a symbol of unshakable faith during the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian.

According to church tradition, Julian of Tarsus was born in the city of Tarsus in Asia Minor to a pagan senator and a devout Christian woman. After his father’s early death, his mother raised him in the Christian faith, which shaped his future destiny.

At the age of 18, Julian refused to offer sacrifices to pagan idols, for which he was arrested. For a year, he was taken from city to city throughout Cilicia, subjected to torture in an attempt to force him to renounce his faith, but he remained steadfast. According to tradition, the saint’s mother accompanied him and supported him with her prayers.

Eventually, the martyr was sentenced to death. He was placed in a sack filled with sand and poisonous snakes and drowned at sea. Later, his body washed ashore, where it was buried, and the saint’s relics, according to tradition, subsequently became renowned for their miraculous healing powers.

In folk tradition, this day is known as Ulyan’s Day. Our ancestors associated June 21 with weather signs used to predict the harvest and the nature of the summer: they paid attention to thunderstorms, the behavior of birds, dew, and the blooming of linden trees.

The day was also considered a time of spiritual fortitude and mercy. There was a widespread belief that quarrels and negative emotions on this day could have a lasting effect, so people were advised to remain calm and help those in need.

Prayer for the Feast:

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, strengthen my faith, grant me patience in trials, and wisdom in my daily affairs. Following the example of the holy martyr Julian, teach me to remain faithful to the truth, not to lose hope, and to keep my heart pure. Bless my family, protect us from all evil, and grant peace to Ukraine and to all who need Your help. Amen.”

As a reminder, June 21 marks International Father’s Day and Father’s Day in Ukraine.
