A memorial plaque to Dzhokhar Dudaev was unveiled in Lviv
A commemorative plaque honoring Dzhokhar Dudaev, the first president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, was unveiled in Lviv on April 21.
This was reported by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi.
The memorial plaque was installed on the street named after Dudaev to mark the 30th anniversary of his death.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of city and regional authorities, as well as distinguished guests, including Ahmed Zakayev, Prime Minister of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in exile.
“Dzhokhar Dudaev died for freedom, justice, and his people’s right to live independently. These are values that Ukraine is defending today,” Sadovyi noted.
He also emphasized that Dudaev Street in Lviv became the first in the world to be named after the leader of the Chechen liberation movement.
Similar memorials honoring Dudaev have already been erected in other Ukrainian cities, including Poltava and Ivano-Frankivsk.
In Abakan, the capital of the Republic of Khakassia, a monument to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin will be erected.
In Kyiv, public outcry has erupted over the city government’s plans to install a fountain at the site of the demolished Lenin monument at the intersection of Khreshchatyk Street and Taras Shevchenko Boulevard.
