A man who built a fake Roman amphitheater for tourists was convicted in Italy
In Italy, 69-year-old Franco Malosso von Rosenfranz was sentenced to two years and four months in prison for fraud after he had spent years passing off an amphitheater he built himself as an ancient Roman monument and selling tickets to tourists for 40 euros.
The man claimed that he had allegedly discovered the “Marine Amphitheater of Berico” near Vicenza following a landslide in 2005. He convinced visitors that the structure dated back to 393 CE and was one of the oldest and largest in the world.
During the investigation, archaeologists determined that the “ancient” amphitheater was built using modern materials, including fiberglass, papier-mâché, concrete, and plaster. Satellite images confirmed that the man had cleared the site and built the structure on his own.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered him to pay a fine of 3,000 euros.
