Paintings by Louis Wain found in a dumpster sold at auction for £16,000

A couple from Wales stumbled upon two unique paintings in a dumpster while taking their dog for a routine walk in Pembrokeshire. As it turned out, they were original works by the famous British artist Louis Wain. Recently, these paintings were successfully sold at auction for 16,000 pounds.

At first, the husband and wife had no idea of the immense historical and financial value of their find. They took the paintings from the dump simply because they seemed cute and suitable as a gift for their daughter-in-law, who loves cats very much.

The paintings hung in her home for about a year, after which they returned to the original owners’ house, where they remained for several more years. All this time, family members merely joked about the paintings’ possible value until they finally decided to look up the artist’s signature online. The search results shocked the family—it turned out that a well-known biographical film, *The Incredible Life of Louis Wain* (2021), starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy.

Experts at Rogers Jones Auctioneers noted that during his lifetime, Louis Wain, who was born in 1860, constantly suffered from poverty and financial hardship, selling his masterpieces for a pittance. However, today he is officially recognized as one of the most influential and distinctive British artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At one time, he worked as a teacher and freelance journalist, but he gained worldwide recognition precisely for his anthropomorphic illustrations of cats. Researchers believe that it was his lighthearted and whimsical works that fundamentally changed the perception of cats in British society, transforming them from purely utilitarian rodent hunters into beloved household companions.

The artist’s own fate was tragic: in 1924, Wayne was diagnosed with a serious mental disorder, leading to his hospitalization at a London clinic for the poor. Later, thanks to the intervention of admirers of his talent, the artist was transferred to the renowned Bethlem Hospital, where he enjoyed good conditions and continued to create his famous feline worlds without pause until his death in 1939.
