China approves methane emissions monitoring standard for oil and gas sector — ECNS
China has approved a national standard with technical guidelines for monitoring methane emissions in the onshore oil and gas industry. According to ECNS, citing China’s State Administration for Market Regulation, the document establishes a unified technical approach for the industry.
Monitoring rules
The standard covers monitoring methods, equipment selection and calibration, as well as data quality control. It is intended to become a common technical basis for detecting and tracking methane emissions along the production chain in China’s onshore oil and gas sector.

Purpose and entry into force
The report notes that methane emissions are an important area of global climate action. The standard is designed to reduce discrepancies between monitoring methods and improve the ability to identify emission sources in China’s onshore oil and gas sector.
The new technical rules have already been tested by major state-owned energy companies China National Petroleum Corporation, Sinopec, and PipeChina. The standard will take effect on January 1, 2027.
