The Romanian government has called on large industrial consumers to voluntarily reduce their electricity usage during evening peak hours—from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The reason is an energy crisis caused by the heat wave and extremely low water levels in the Danube, on which the safe operation of nuclear power plants depends.
According to “European Truth,” citing Digi24, Romania’s interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan discussed the situation with representatives of about 80 of the largest electricity-consuming companies. According to him, some of the companies have already agreed to adjust their work schedules.
Bolojan stated that Dacia and Ford will halt production from today until August 19. He said this will save about 200 MW. Several other companies are expected to make a similar decision.

The interim prime minister also stated that Romania is trying to import electricity from all available sources and called on citizens, companies, and government agencies to voluntarily reduce consumption. According to him, average consumption was already 200 MW lower on Monday morning.
Bolojan also called on local authorities and heads of institutions to reduce decorative lighting on buildings in the evening hours. The Romanian company Nuclearelectrica has begun purchasing electricity from Ukraine with the assistance of Moldova’s Energocom. In addition, on Monday morning, a rock was blasted at the bottom of the Danube to ensure a higher water level near the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant.
