Utah announces AI pilot for acne treatment — STAT News

Regulators in the U.S. state of Utah have announced a pilot project using artificial intelligence to assess patients with mild and moderate acne and issue prescriptions for medications. At the initial stage, the system’s decisions will be reviewed by a licensed clinician, who will approve prescriptions. Later, the service may be allowed to prescribe medications without prior human review.

Assessment of patients with acne

Startup Nolla Health plans to launch an AI service in the state. It will assess patients using a structured questionnaire and analysis of skin photographs.

The product can determine whether a patient is suitable for one of a list of low-risk medications. As STAT News reports, Nolla Health said last year that it had raised $4.5 million in investment, including from General Catalyst. The company also seeks to direct the treatment of a number of conditions using AI.

Regulatory sandbox

The new pilot is part of a significant expansion of Utah’s AI sandbox program. It allows the Utah Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy to make exceptions to regulatory requirements for companies testing AI products under state supervision.
