Walmart CEO Doug McMillon to step down after more than a decade
Walmart has announced that its longtime CEO Doug McMillon will step down after more than ten years in the role. He will be succeeded on February 1, 2025, by John Furner, who currently leads Walmart’s U.S. operations. The company emphasized that the leadership transition comes at a pivotal time as Walmart continues navigating a changing retail landscape.

Under McMillon’s leadership, Walmart faced significant challenges — from tariffs and supply chain disruptions to shifts in customer behavior. During this period, the retailer expanded online services, improved store operations, and attracted a broader customer base, including higher-income shoppers. Walmart recently reported its strongest U.S. market share growth in over a decade.
McMillon also oversaw Walmart’s evolution into a more dynamic ecommerce competitor, investing heavily in automation, delivery infrastructure, and the Walmart+ membership program. Beyond corporate developments, he played a visible role in public affairs, serving as chairman of Business Roundtable and speaking out on issues such as political extremism and workplace safety.
