Nvidia will provide funding for OpenAI's data center in Ohio

Nvidia will provide financial support and computing resources for OpenAI’s new data center in Ohio. The facility will be built on the PORTS-Pike technology campus in Pike City, and SB Energy will handle its construction and management, according to CNBC.

The credit financing is expected to provide an initial computing capacity of 4.25 gigawatts, with the option to add another 3.75 gigawatts. The capacity is expected to be commissioned in phases starting in 2028.

OpenAI will lease the data center from SB Energy for 20 years. According to CNBC, OpenAI holds a stake in SB Energy, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was one of the company’s early investors.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that the agreement is intended to provide OpenAI with long-term infrastructure for Nvidia computing and the ability to regularly upgrade it as new generations of technology emerge.

Earlier, CNBC reported that Nvidia was discussing a financial guarantee of up to $250 billion with OpenAI, which would allow the model developer to secure debt financing for a 10-gigawatt data center in Ohio. Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Nvidia was expected to reduce the guarantee to less than $120 billion.

As part of the project, SB Energy and SoftBank will build power generation facilities to support 10 gigawatts of capacity and invest at least $4.2 billion in the region’s grid infrastructure. Nvidia will also invest $1.5 billion in SB Energy.

OpenAI expects the new data center to support the creation of 35,000 jobs in the construction industry by 2032, as well as 2,500 long-term jobs. OpenAI President Greg Brockman, in comments to CNBC, called computing power a fundamental resource for the artificial intelligence industry.
