Pop Mart sues 3D printer manufacturer over Labubu

Pop Mart has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the consumer 3D printer maker Bambu Lab, based in Shenzhen. The lawsuit concerns the MakerWorld platform, where users uploaded files to print replicas of Labubu, one of Pop Mart’s major hits.

MakerWorld is a 3D model service operated by Bambu Lab, launched in 2023, while Bambu Lab itself was founded in 2020 by former DJI employees. The platform's community reaches tens of thousands of active users monthly. The case could set a legal precedent, as the court must decide whether the platform operator is responsible for user-uploaded content intended for personal use, a situation compared to the early days of music file sharing.

This ruling may shape the future regulation of consumer 3D printing and the liability of platforms in protecting intellectual property rights.
