CEO adviser outlines principles of top managers’ accountability

Ernest De-Graft Egir, an adviser to chief executive officers, outlined principles of executive accountability for work results in an opinion column published by MyJoyOnline. In his view, it is most effective when expectations are clearly defined and leaders are willing to take responsibility for the outcomes of their work.

Measurable results

The author believes that CEOs should create an environment in which executive leaders are accountable not only for completed actions but also for measurable results. Under his approach, accountability should be consistent, transparent and directly linked to the organization’s priorities.

Egir noted that high-performing leadership teams do not avoid difficult conversations about performance indicators. Instead, they use such discussions to improve the execution of assigned tasks.

Five steps for leaders

The author advises clearly allocating responsibilities among executive leaders, setting measurable expectations for their work and objectively assessing results. Other recommendations include responding promptly to underperformance and recognizing strong work results.

For CEOs, he proposes making accountability a permanent part of the leadership agenda, responding quickly to performance gaps and ensuring that top managers set an example of accountability for their own teams. As a practical step, Egir advises asking each leader to define the main result for the fourth quarter and the metric that will demonstrate its achievement.

In the author’s view, executive accountability creates a sense of ownership of results, strengthens task execution and improves the organization’s performance.
