US-China trade tensions shake Panama Canal operations

Amid escalating trade tensions between the United States and China, Panama’s Supreme Court canceled the concession held by Chinese companies to operate the country’s ports on January 30, a decision influenced by former US President Donald Trump. As a result, Panama took full control over its port terminals, significantly affecting their operational management.

Chinese companies have started detaining vessels flying the Panamanian flag. Notably, CK Hutchison had legally operated two terminals for nearly 30 years, investing over $1.8 billion in infrastructure, technology, and job creation before losing control amid the political dispute.

The Panamanian government raided the Chinese company’s office, an action welcomed by Washington, while China is now appealing to the US for support.

A similar incident occurred recently with the Dutch company Nexperia, which was also seized, leading the Netherlands to seek Chinese chip supplies.

Thus, trade conflicts between major world powers are causing instability in critical infrastructure operations such as Panama’s ports, with far-reaching implications for global trade.

This situation is likely to develop further, potentially triggering additional interventions in the management of strategic assets by various countries involved in the global trade arena.
