Russia not elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization — Sybiga

Russia was not elected as a member of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN agency responsible for maritime safety, according to Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga.

He noted that this is another defeat for Russia in elections to the governing bodies of international organizations, following setbacks at UNESCO and the OPCW, reflecting its growing international isolation.

Sybiga emphasized that Russia systematically violates international law, attacks civilian ships, destroys port infrastructure, and uses shadow fleets, grossly breaching safety standards, making its presence in the IMO Council unacceptable.

The IMO Assembly elected China, Greece, Italy, Japan, the United States, Norway, Panama, Liberia, South Korea, and the United Kingdom to the Council for 2026–2027.
