In South Africa, Rosario Brown, who signed a letter to the editor from Mouille Point, urged voters ahead of the November 4 local elections to assess more than candidates’ party affiliation. In his view, they should also pay attention to the character, integrity and behavior of those seeking public office.
Social media behavior
According to TimesLIVE, Brown called social media one of the indicators of a candidate’s character. He suggested that voters assess how politicians communicate with people who disagree with them or hold different political views.
The letter writer also urged people to consider whether candidates use their pages to inform, engage in dialogue and unite communities. In his view, systematic insults, humiliation or contempt for others on public platforms may intensify after a person is elected to office.

Problems of local communities
Brown linked voters’ responsibility to the quality of local governance and public services. As examples of unacceptable conditions, he cited the lack of water in households, prolonged power outages, dangerous potholes on roads and communities living near untreated sewage.
The letter also mentions threats from gangs and the deaths of children after consuming food or drinks from unregulated establishments. Brown advised voters to check candidates’ track records, assess their character and make an informed choice, as election decisions will affect quality of life, children’s future and the dignity of communities.
