In Milan, Italy, Benfica defeated Milan 2-0 in the opening round of the Europa League’s league phase. It was the Italian club’s first defeat under Ruben Amorim, Dawn reports.
Benfica’s first win over Milan
Milan, a seven-time European Cup winner, had recorded two wins and two draws in their first four Serie A rounds before the match. However, the hosts failed to convert their chances, while Benfica maintained their unbeaten start to the season.
In the 16th minute, Dodi Lukebakio opened the scoring with an individual run: the Belgian cut inside from the right flank and struck with his left foot into the far bottom corner. Eight minutes after the break, Jakub Kaminski doubled the visitors’ lead, finishing a cross from Souffian El Karouani from the left flank.
It was Benfica’s first victory over Milan. The Portuguese club had lost to the Italians in the European Cup finals of 1963 and 1990. After the match, Amorim said the team had only been working together for two months and would look for solutions to adapt to such matches while also securing victories.

Sunderland returned to Europe with a win
In England, Sunderland beat Dutch side AZ Alkmaar 1-0 in their first European match in 53 years. Régis Le Bris’s team last played in Europe in the second round of the 1973 Cup Winners’ Cup.
In the first half, Enzo Le Fée hit the post. Twenty minutes after the break, he converted a penalty awarded for Wesley Patati’s foul on him. In the 81st minute, Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs prevented Waldemar Byskov from equalising. Defender Trai Hume said after the match that the team, coaching staff and fans deserved this moment.
