Belarusian athletes have been allowed to compete in the modern pentathlon
The International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) has allowed athletes and national teams from Belarus to compete again in international competitions under their country’s flag. The decision provides for the return of Belarusian athletes to full participation in modern pentathlon tournaments. The relevant changes have already taken effect.
This is stated on the organization’s website.
It is noted that Belarusian athletes competed as “Athletes in Neutral Status” (AIN) after the UIPM adopted the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in March 2023. However, on May 7, 2026, the IOC recommended lifting all remaining restrictions on Belarusian athletes and teams in global sports, following which the UIPM Executive Committee adopted the corresponding decision.
“The UIPM will lift restrictions on Belarusian athletes, effective immediately for all future UIPM competitions (with the exception of the upcoming World Cup in Pazardzhik); Belarusian athletes will be permitted to compete in their national uniforms, under their national flag, and to the national anthem,” the statement reads.
From now on, the Belarusian Modern Pentathlon Federation will be able to send full-fledged athletes to UIPM competitions, starting with the 2026 UIPM Modern Pentathlon World Cup in Budapest, which will take place June 9–13. Belarus will also be eligible for team medals and participation in relays during this year’s World Championships in all age groups.
The AIN system for Belarusian athletes will be applied once again during the 2026 UIPM Modern Pentathlon World Cup in Pazardzhik, which begins tomorrow, May 13. Meanwhile, the AIN system for Russian athletes remains in effect until further notice.
“In the rationale for its May 7 decision, the IOC clearly stated that athletes should not be held responsible for the actions of their governments. We are pleased that this principle was reaffirmed in the decision to restore normal competition conditions for Belarusian athletes. I would like to once again express our support for members of the community in Ukraine, whose lives continue to be affected by the military occupation of their country. As a global sports organization, we strive to promote the sports arena as a place where people can put aside their differences and come together, competing in a spirit of peace and respect,” said UIPM President Rob Stull.
