Enric Mas all but secured victory at the Vuelta a España
Spanish Movistar cyclist Enric Mas retained the lead in the general classification of the Vuelta a España after the penultimate stage in Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountains. Over the 186-kilometre stage, he virtually secured victory in the multi-day race.
Lead after the mountain stage
As Channel NewsAsia reports, citing Reuters, the 31-year-old Mas spent most of the stage riding in a group with Slovenian Primož Roglič, Felix Gall and Richard Carapaz. These were the riders who still had a chance of taking the leader’s red jersey from him.
On the final nine-kilometre climb to Collado del Alguacil, the cyclist maintained his advantage over Roglič, which stood at one minute and 37 seconds after 19 stages. By the end of the day, Mas had even increased his overall lead.

Landa wins the stage
Spaniard Mikel Landa of Soudal–Quick-Step won the penultimate stage. It was the experienced rider’s first stage victory in seven years.
The final stage of the Vuelta will be ceremonial in nature and will take place around Granada. If he retains his position, Mas will become the first Spaniard to win the Vuelta since Alberto Contador 12 years ago.
