Haaland goal brings Manchester City derby victory
Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0 in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford. Erling Haaland scored the only goal in the 60th minute, while the away side had played with 10 men since the 23rd minute following Phil Foden’s dismissal, Sky Sports News reports.
Foden’s dismissal
Foden was shown a red card after a confrontation with United captain Bruno Fernandes. According to Sky Sports News, Fernandes first struck the ball into his opponent’s torso, after which Foden responded by moving his legs toward the Portuguese player.
The referee’s decision sparked debate among pundits. Roy Keane and Micah Richards believed Fernandes also bore responsibility for the incident. Gary Neville, for his part, said that Foden reacted by kicking his opponent in the stomach.

VAR review of the goal
After the dismissal, Manchester United had several opportunities to open the scoring. Marcus Rashford hit the post from a free kick before halftime, while Kobbie Mainoo struck the goal frame at the start of the second half. However, in the 60th minute, Haaland converted a cross at the far post.
The flag was raised after the goal, signalling an offside. Following a lengthy review, the semi-automated offside system confirmed that Haaland had been in a legal position. At the same time, Sky Sports News notes that Enzo Fernandez was offside during the development of the attack and tried to reach the ball, but VAR did not disallow the goal. Neville expressed the view that the officials made a mistake in this incident.
Late in the game, Gianluigi Donnarumma saved City after a shot by Bryan Mbeumo. Manchester City have taken the maximum number of points from four Premier League matches and joined Arsenal among the leaders in the title race.
