The IWF has paved the way for Russians and Belarusians to compete internationally

The International Weightlifting Federation has adopted a decision allowing athletes from Russia and Belarus of all age groups to once again participate in international competitions. The restrictions that were previously in place have been lifted and took effect immediately. The federation attributes this to the IOC’s recommendations regarding the principles of neutrality in sport.

The Executive Committee of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has officially amended the rules for competition participation, opening access for athletes from Russia and Belarus to tournaments in all age groups, including youth and junior categories, which were previously restricted by specific sanctions. The new rules take effect immediately and apply to all official competitions under the auspices of the IWF, provided that athletes meet the current eligibility criteria.

The federation notes that the decision was made in light of the latest recommendations from the International Olympic Committee, which emphasizes the principles of neutrality and equal access for athletes to international competitions regardless of nationality. The IWF’s statement also emphasizes that the organization remains committed to ensuring fair competition and preserving the integrity of the sport, while creating conditions for athletes to participate in accordance with the principles of inclusivity and sporting equality. This was reported on the IWF’s official website.
