Manchester City thrash Aston Villa to top Women's Super League

Manchester City defeated Aston Villa 4-1 away from home in an English Women's Super League match in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The reigning champions claimed their second win in their first two matches of the season and moved into sole possession of first place in the standings, Channel NewsAsia reports.

Manchester City's advantage

Defender Jade Rose opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Fifteen minutes later, Mary Fowler doubled Manchester City's lead. Before halftime, Aston Villa reduced the deficit through a goal by Amalie Vangsgaard, leaving the score at 2-1 in favour of the visitors at the break.

Late goals

Aston Villa put up resistance, but in the 74th minute Bunny Shaw scored Manchester City's third goal. An own goal in stoppage time set the final score at 4-1.

In other matches, Birmingham City drew 2-2 with Brighton, while Everton beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 thanks to an own goal by Leanne Robe. Liverpool came from behind at home against Tottenham to draw 1-1, with Aurelie Csillag equalising after an own goal by Sam Kerr. Crystal Palace played out a goalless draw with Arsenal, while West Ham beat London City Lionesses 2-1 on Saturday.
