MyJoyOnline names five candidates for Ghana squad for AFCON 2027 qualifiers
Ghanaian outlet MyJoyOnline has named five footballers who, in its view, deserve a call-up to the national team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The list includes Augustine Boakye, Rahim Ibrahim, Joseph Opoku, Nathaniel Adjei and Prince Osei-Owusu.
Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz is to determine the squad for the qualifying matches. As the outlet notes, alongside experienced players who remain obvious candidates, several Ghanaian footballers abroad are showing form worthy of consideration for a call-up.
Attack and midfield
Augustine Boakye has scored three goals and provided two assists in five Ligue 2 matches for Saint-Étienne at the start of the 2026/27 season, playing 377 minutes. He was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2026 World Cup but has yet to make his senior debut for the national team.
Slovan’s 25-year-old midfielder Rahim Ibrahim has played four matches this season, started twice and scored two goals in 151 minutes. He also made his UEFA Champions League debut in the Bratislava club’s match against Paris Saint-Germain. MyJoyOnline believes Ibrahim could be an additional option in central midfield in the absence of Thomas Partey.

Twenty-year-old winger Joseph Opoku has scored two goals in six Championship matches after joining Swansea City, playing 343 minutes. In the previous season at Belgian club Zulte Waregem, he scored three goals and provided seven assists in 26 appearances, helping the club earn promotion.
Defence and attack
Lorient defender Nathaniel Adjei has played two Ligue 1 matches this season. According to MyJoyOnline, the 24-year-old won seven aerial duels, made four tackles, and his duel success rate stands at 87%.
Twenty-nine-year-old forward Prince Osei-Owusu has scored 13 goals and provided six assists in 22 MLS matches, playing 1,792 minutes. He is 1.91 metres tall.
Ghana will begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with an away match against Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24, before hosting Gambia at Accra Sports Stadium on September 29. Ghana did not take part in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
