One of the world's best basketball players suffered an injury in the NBA
Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Dončić suffered a serious injury to the hamstring in his left leg during a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The game ended in a crushing 96-139 loss for the Californians, but the biggest tragedy for the team was the condition of their leader.
The incident occurred in the third quarter when the 27-year-old Slovenian felt a sharp pain while dribbling and fell to the floor.
It is worth noting that Dončić had been feeling discomfort as early as the first half of the game, but after being examined by the medical staff led by JJ Redick, he returned to the game.
The Lakers’ head coach commented on this decision as follows: “We checked him during the break, he underwent treatment and was cleared to play. We would never intentionally put a player at risk.”
Despite this, with 7:39 remaining in the third quarter, Dončić was forced to leave the court for good, having scored only 12 points.
The situation is critical, as Luka Dončić leads the NBA this season in scoring, averaging 33.5 points per game.
On Friday, the player is scheduled to undergo an MRI, which will determine the severity of the injury and the recovery timeline.
Teammate LeBron James did not hide his disappointment, calling the injury to the key player “the worst thing that could happen at this stage of the season.”
The loss to the Thunder snapped the Lakers’ winning streak and cast doubt on their chances of securing a high seed in the playoffs, given that Dončić was considered the leading contender for the MVP title.
