Pakistan secures an Asian Games medal in men’s squash — Dawn

Pakistani squash players Noor Zaman and Mohammad Ashab Irfan reached the semifinals of the men’s singles tournament at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, guaranteeing their country at least a bronze medal. In the men’s singles squash competition, bronze medals are awarded to both semifinal losers.

As Dawn reports, third seed Noor Zaman defeated Hong Kong’s Chi Hin Henry Leung in the quarterfinals. Fifth seed Ashab Irfan overcame fourth-seeded Indian Veer Chotrani, losing the first game but winning the match 3:1 — 6:11, 11:8, 11:6, 11:6.

First occurrence since 2002

This is the first time since 2002 that two Pakistani representatives have reached the semifinals of the squash competition at the Asian Games. In the round of 16, both Pakistanis did not concede a single game: Noor Zaman defeated Kuwait’s Ammar Altamimi — 11:4, 11:9, 11:4, while Ashab Irfan beat Mohammad Al-Nafsan of Saudi Arabia — 11:9, 11:3, 11:5.

The semifinal matches are scheduled for Saturday, while the men’s singles final is due to take place on Sunday.

Pakistan’s mixed pair Asim Khan and Mewish Ali ended their campaign in the quarterfinals, losing to Hong Kong representatives Cheuk Nam Lau and Yee Lam Toby Tse 6:11, 7:11. Pakistan’s men’s foil fencing team was eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to China — 12:45.

In swimming, Mishael Ayesha Hayat Ayub finished 25th among 27 competitors in the women’s 50-meter butterfly with a time of 30.95 seconds. Hamza Asif placed 35th among 40 athletes in the 50-meter breaststroke, recording 30.47 seconds. In badminton, Mohammad Ali Larosh was eliminated in the first round of the singles event and also lost in the mixed doubles tournament alongside Mahoor Shahzad. Noreen Hussein did not record a result in the women’s pole vault final.
