Five-time NBA champion Don Nelson has died at the age of 87
Don Nelson, a five-time NBA champion and former head coach of the U.S. national team, has died. The legendary basketball player and coach was 87 years old.
“On Sunday morning, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Don Nelson, peacefully passed away, surrounded by his loving family,” reads a statement from the Nelson family.
Nelson played for the Chicago Zephyrs, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Boston Celtics, with whom he won five NBA championships.
As a head coach, he worked with Milwaukee, Golden State, New York, and Dallas. Nelson was named NBA Coach of the Year three times (1983, 1986, and 1992).
In 1994, the U.S. national team won the World Championship under his leadership.
In 2012, Nelson was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Earlier, Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 tournament in Washington. In the round of 16, she defeated Polina Kudermetova, who previously represented Russia and now plays for Uzbekistan. Following this victory, the Ukrainian continues her quest for the title on American courts.
