Legendary French soccer player Robert Mouine has died
Former French soccer player Robert Mouine has died at the age of 96.
“It is with great sadness that Lyon learned of the death of Robert Mouyne. This defender played 149 matches for Olympique Lyonnais. The club extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones,” the club said in a statement.
Robert Muine was the last surviving player from the French national team that won bronze medals at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.
However, due to an injury sustained shortly before the tournament, he did not play a single match for the national team. Nevertheless, Muine was named to France’s World Cup roster and was in Sweden with the team.
Thus, despite being part of the 1958 World Cup bronze-medal-winning squad, Muine never played an official match for the French national team during his career.
At the club level, the defender played for “Toulouse,” “Cannes,” and “Lyon.”
Mouyne began his professional career in 1949 with Toulouse. Over four seasons, he played 65 league matches.
From 1953 to 1955, he played for Cannes, where his performances caught the attention of the Lyon coaching staff.
Mouyne joined the Lyon club in 1955 and spent the next four seasons there. For most of that time, he was the team’s starting defender.
In 1959, he returned to Toulouse, where he continued to play until the end of his professional career in 1963.
Robert Muine went down in French soccer history as a member of the generation that won the bronze medal at the 1958 World Cup, although he never took the field for the national team due to an injury.
The news of his death was announced by “Lyon,” the club for which he spent a significant portion of his professional career.
