In Lagos, Nigeria, Ize Matebese was elected the new president of the Nigeria Triathlon Union. The electoral congress, which also served as the organization’s general assembly, took place on September 30 at the headquarters of the Nigeria Olympic Committee on the grounds of the National Stadium in the Surulere district, Premium Times reports.

Matebese succeeded Wale Oladunjoye, who had led the Union since 2018 and, after two terms, called for new elections. The new leadership also includes Abiona Babarinde as first vice president, Olukayode Oguntayo as second vice president, Priscilla Iroaganachi as secretary general, Raliat Abdulsalam as deputy secretary general, and Modupeola Ofonedo as treasurer.

Plans of the new leadership

After her election, Matebese said she views the new position as an opportunity to begin a new stage in the development of triathlon in the country. Her immediate priorities include forming an active team, restoring the Union’s secretariat, and holding a championship intended to raise awareness of the sport.

The new leadership is expected to focus on regular competitions, grassroots development, work with schools, and the promotion of triathlon. Matebese noted that work with schoolchildren should help identify and develop young athletes. She also expressed hope that the Union would be able to identify athletes capable of competing at major international events, including the Olympic Games. Nigeria has not yet been represented in Olympic triathlon competitions.

History of the Union

The Union’s lifetime president, Lanre Glover, said that the change in leadership could help restore regular competitions and development programs. According to him, Matebese was among the organization’s founders and has experience related to international championships and congresses.

The Nigeria Triathlon Union was founded in November 2006 to develop the sport, which combines swimming, cycling, and running. In February 2007, the organization was admitted to the International Triathlon Union, now known as World Triathlon. In May of the same year, the Union became a full member of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.
