Donetsk’s “Shakhtar” has bolstered its defense ahead of the Champions League campaign by signing Alan Maturro, a center back from Italy’s “Genoa.”

The 21-year-old Uruguayan defender signed a five-year contract with Shakhtar. According to a source, the transfer cost the Ukrainian powerhouse approximately 5 million euros.

Maturro is a product of the Uruguayan club Defensor. He is capable of playing not only as a center back but also covering the left side of the defense.

The Uruguayan spent last season in Spain. Maturro played for Levante on loan, appearing in 21 matches across all competitions. He scored one goal.

The defender also has experience playing for Uruguay’s youth national team. With that team, Maturro played in 11 matches and scored one goal.

The 21-year-old has not yet been called up to Uruguay’s senior national team.

Maturro’s transfer marks another addition to Shakhtar’s roster ahead of the start of the new European club season.

The transfer was announced on the Ukrainian club’s official website.

Earlier, Donetsk’s Shakhtar agreed to play four home matches of the Champions League group stage at London’s Stamford Bridge stadium, home of Chelsea. The games are contingent upon receiving the necessary regulatory approvals from UEFA.
