Argentina’s women’s field hockey team defeated Australia 1:0 in the World Cup semi-final in Wavre, Belgium. Julieta Jankunas scored the only goal of the match in the 47th minute, converting a penalty corner in the fourth quarter.

Late goal by Jankunas

Australia’s Hockeyroos fought until the final seconds but were unable to level the score. For the Australians, it was an attempt to reach the World Cup final for the first time in 12 years and compete for their third world title.

According to ABC News Australia, Australia became the first team in 40 years to reach a World Cup semi-final with only one victory at the tournament. On their way to this stage, the Australians also suffered one defeat and drew three times.

Argentina to face the Netherlands

In the final, Argentina will meet the Netherlands, the reigning world, Olympic and European champions. In the second semi-final, the Dutch defeated the tournament’s co-hosts, Belgium, 1:0.

Frederique Matla scored the only goal in that match in the 28th minute. Late in the game, the Belgians believed they had equalised through a goal by Famke van Heel, but after a video review, the goal was disallowed due to interference by her teammate in the circle. The final will be a repeat of the 2022 decider, when the Netherlands beat Argentina 3:1 in Spain.
