American tennis player Coco Gauff has withdrawn from the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan, China, where she was set to defend her title. The competition organizers announced this, Interia Sport reports.

Reason for withdrawal

Gauff explained her decision by the need for rest and recovery after a long season. By withdrawing from the tournament, the American will lose 1,000 WTA ranking points earned for winning in Wuhan last season.

Defeat in Beijing

Before announcing her withdrawal, Gauff finished her campaign at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. In the round of 16, she lost to Belgian Elise Mertens in two sets, 3:6, 3:6. In the Beijing quarterfinals, Mertens will play against Iga Swiatek, who earlier defeated Iva Jovic.
