A new stadium in Bucharest will be named after Mircea Lucescu

The future home stadium of the "Dinamo" football club in Bucharest will be named "Dinamo Mircea Lucescu" in honor of the legendary coach, who passed away on April 7, 2026, at the age of 80. 

Romanian Interior Minister Cătălin Preda announced the start of the legal renaming process, highlighting the coach’s invaluable contribution to the development of national and international soccer, according to the Romania Journal.

Lucescu, who during his long career led the Romanian national team, Donetsk’s “Shakhtar,” and Kyiv’s “Dynamo,” is considered a key figure who revolutionized the profession of soccer coaching in his home country. Construction of the new arena, which will bear the coach’s name, is scheduled to be completed by 2028, serving as a symbol of gratitude for his decades-long dedication to the game and numerous trophies. His former clubs and the Romanian Football Federation expressed their deepest condolences to the family, noting that the world has lost not only an outstanding tactician but also a mentor to entire generations of players.

The farewell ceremony for Mircea Lucescu took place on April 8 at the National Arena in Bucharest, where thousands of fans and officials gathered to pay their last respects to “Mister.” The legendary coach’s funeral is scheduled for Friday, April 10, at the famous Bellu Cemetery in the capital. 

On April 5, Mircea Lucescu was placed in an induced coma following another episode of severe cardiac arrhythmia. He passed away on April 7.
