In Australia, Errol Gulden ready to captain Sydney Swans after Mills injury

In Australia, Sydney Swans midfielder Errol Gulden said he is ready to take on the team captain’s duties after current captain Callum Mills was injured. ABC News Australia reports this, citing AAP.

Captain’s injury

Mills suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the winning qualifying final against the Brisbane Lions. He will miss the remainder of this season’s finals series and may be sidelined for the entire 2027 season.

The 24-year-old Gulden said he would gladly accept an offer to become interim captain and considers himself ready for the role. According to him, players do not need to change what they are already doing, and the team should continue performing after losing its leader.

In the match against Brisbane, Mills left the field late in the first quarter. Gulden scored one goal, recorded 34 possessions and won the contest for the ball eight times, helping the Swans defeat the reigning two-time champions by 53 points.

Candidates and next match

Sydney coach Dean Cox may also choose former co-captain Dane Rampe, as well as Jake Lloyd, James Rowbottom or Tom Papley, as interim captain.

Vice-captain Isaac Heeney is among five players serving club suspensions following an incident after a match at Melbourne’s Pullman hotel last month. Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, James Jordon and Riley Bice will also not play until the end of the season.

On Friday, the Sydney Swans will host Fremantle, the regular-season winners, in a preliminary final at the SCG. The winner will advance to the Australian Football League grand final.
