India’s women’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, by 72 runs, but did not take the trophy and winners’ medals during the awards ceremony. As Dawn reports, the presentation at Dubai International Cricket Stadium was delayed by more than half an hour.

According to Cricinfo, the ceremony ended without the Indian team receiving the winners’ medals and trophy from Asian Cricket Council chairman Mohsin Naqvi. At the same time, Sri Lanka representative Chamari Athapaththu received from Naqvi a cheque for the second-placed team.
Dawn notes that this is not the first time India has declined to accept a tournament trophy from Naqvi. The report does not provide statements from the Indian team regarding the events during the ceremony.

How the final unfolded
India won its eighth Asia Cup title. In 20 overs, the team scored 185 runs for the loss of five wickets. Shafali Verma scored 68 runs, while Smriti Mandhana made 59.
Sree Charani took four wickets, while Deepti Sharma took three. For Sri Lanka, only Chamari Athapaththu, Vishmi Gunaratne and Nilakshi de Silva reached double figures. Athapaththu was her team’s top scorer with 36 runs from 32 deliveries.
After the match, Athapaththu said her team had not produced its best performance in all three departments, but intended to return stronger ahead of the Asian Games. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said the team had maintained its own high standards and noted the contributions of Verma and Mandhana.
