Amazon Prime Video to add short news videos in the US

In the United States, Amazon Prime Video is expanding its news section with on-demand short video reports featuring local and nationwide news. Initially, the clips will be available on TVs and other devices used for viewing at home, with plans to later launch them in the web version of the service and mobile apps.

Where to find the clips

As TechCrunch reports, short reports will appear in the News section of the Prime Video app, in the Trending Topics and Local News collections. They will complement existing local, nationwide and international news coverage from major content providers.

This existing news coverage is available to all users in the United States regardless of whether they have a Prime subscription. Amazon also has not confirmed whether the short videos in mobile apps will be vertical, stating only that it will be a short format.

Short format

TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts are increasingly used by younger audiences, including Generation Z representatives, to get news. Amazon, which does not have a separate social platform, is adding short videos to Prime Video in hopes of attracting this audience's attention.

According to Pew Research, young news consumers seek short content that looks organic rather than overly produced. Peacock added support for short video clips in March, HBO Max and Netflix in July, and Disney+ in August.
