Amazon blocks purchases through Meta's Muse AI agent — CNBC

Amazon has blocked Meta's personal AI agent Muse from purchasing goods in its app, saying this violates the service's terms of use. Introduced by Meta two weeks ago, Muse can search for products across various websites and marketplaces and connect to Shopify or Stripe for payment.

As CNBC reports, the Muse app topped the Apple App Store rankings, surpassing ChatGPT, while Meta shares rose by more than 20% in the two weeks after its launch. The company also says the agent can schedule meetings and travel, fill out electronic forms, and monitor home security cameras.

Amazon protects its connection with shoppers

Amazon had previously restricted access for agent tools from OpenAI and Google and also filed a lawsuit against Perplexity. The retailer claimed that the startup had tried to conceal its AI agents so they could collect data from the company's website without permission.

In a statement, Amazon said that third-party apps offering to make purchases on behalf of customers from other companies must operate openly and respect service providers' decisions regarding participation. Meta did not comment.

Market reaction and Meta's plans

Emarketer analyst Max Willens believes that as the use of AI agents grows, Amazon will increasingly protect its role in the customer journey. According to him, consumers are increasingly beginning product searches not on marketplaces but with AI assistants.

Amid concerns about Muse's capabilities, the share prices of financial companies Charles Schwab and LPL Financial Holdings declined, while Booking Holdings and Expedia shares fell. At the same time, after the Muse-related rise, Meta shares have gained 13% since the beginning of 2026, while the Nasdaq index has risen 16%.

Cantor analysts noted that Muse's business model has not yet been formed, as almost all of Meta's revenue comes from digital advertising. Mizuho expects Meta to link Muse's development with its smart glasses, which Meta produces in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, at the Meta Connect conference.
