Anthropic and Nvidia clash over the pace of AI development in the US
In the United States, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing the development of artificial intelligence at the Salesforce Dreamforce conference in San Francisco, while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang spoke out against this approach. The Guardian World reports.
Call for safety reviews
Amodei compared the situation in the AI industry to the automotive sector: if a serious incident occurs at a competitor company, such as a brake failure, all manufacturers should review their own safety practices. According to him, it is more responsible not to accuse competitors of being unsafe, but to assess one’s own risks and acknowledge that companies are not perfect.
The head of Anthropic proposed three steps: involving independent evaluators in the work of AI companies, coordinating safety standards among democratic countries, and eventually moving toward broader international coordination. He said Anthropic had committed to involving independent evaluators and intended to discuss the other two areas with industry representatives.
Amodei, Elon Musk of xAI, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have recently called for reducing the pace of AI development. The discussion intensified after warnings from former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who, upon leaving the company, said AI could lead to humanity’s extinction within the next decade.

Nvidia’s position
At the same conference, Huang urged companies to move as quickly as possible and not slow development. In his view, new regulation is not necessary: companies should delay product releases until they are convinced of their safety, rather than ask the US government to intervene.
The Nvidia chief said that in the future every company and enterprise would become an AI company. He also rejected claims that artificial intelligence would destroy jobs, calling the idea “complete nonsense.”
A day before Dreamforce, during the All-In summit in Los Angeles, US President Donald Trump called Huang while he was on stage. Trump called concerns about AI a “hoax” and said slowing development would benefit only China. Huang responded that the United States must ensure victory for everyone in the American AI race.
Amodei also noted that what surprised him most was the speed of the technology’s spread and the economic growth of the companies developing it. According to him, Anthropic expected the models to be highly capable, but did not foresee such rapid growth of the business around AI.
