Apple unveils feature to verify changes to photos from iPhone
Apple has unveiled the Apple Reference Image feature for photos taken on the iPhone 18 Pro. According to the company, it is intended to help determine whether an image was altered after it was created, including with artificial intelligence tools, TechCrunch reports.
Digital negative
When taking a photo, the main camera sensor will also record signed sensor data. Apple’s Private Cloud Compute service will transform it into an immutable reference image that can be viewed in the Photos app.
Apple compares this mechanism to a digital negative. The reference image can be compared with other versions of a photograph to determine whether changes were made to it. The company said this capability is important for photojournalists and photographers.

Access in apps
Initially, reference images will only be viewable in the Photos app. At the same time, Apple plans to provide developers with an API so they can integrate this feature into their own apps.
The company also announced support for the SynthID standard. According to Apple, it is intended to help users determine whether an image was created or altered using AI.
