Smartphone makers raise prices for new models — The Verge
Apple, Google, Samsung, Sony, and Motorola have raised prices for a number of new smartphones this year. The Verge reports that in many cases, the models have become about $100 more expensive than previous generations.
New prices from Apple, Google, and Samsung
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. This is $100 more than the starting prices of their predecessors. Apple also raised the prices of older iPhone models by $100.
Google's Pixel 11 costs from $899, while the previous year's Pixel 10 had a starting price of $799. Samsung released the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra for $2,099 — $100 more expensive than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 it replaced.

Rising component costs
The trend has also affected other brands. Sony's Xperia 10 VIII became £150 more expensive, while the new Moto Razr models cost $100 more than their predecessors. The Verge notes that the Moto Razr models received few or no significant upgrades that would explain the higher price.
The publication cites a shortage of components linked to the expansion of data centers for artificial intelligence as one reason for rising prices. The cost of RAM has increased particularly noticeably. Nothing CEO Carl Pei previously said that by the release of the Nothing Phone 4A, memory costs for this model had doubled.
According to The Verge, almost all components for smartphones and other electronics are becoming more expensive. Qualcomm, which makes processors for many new phones, also raised prices for its chips this month. The publication writes that the component shortage could last for years.
