FlightAware has filed a lawsuit against Kalshi over bets on flight cancellations
The flight tracking service FlightAware has filed a lawsuit against the prediction market platform Kalshi, accusing it of unauthorized use of its data and brand name for betting on flight cancellations in the U.S., according to TechCrunch.
About a month ago, Kalshi began allowing users to place bets on the number of canceled flights in the U.S. or at a specific airport. According to FlightAware, the platform used the service’s data and branding without permission, even after being asked to stop.
The lawsuit states that Kalshi did not inform FlightAware of its intention to use its information to determine the outcomes of such markets. FlightAware also claims that it only learned about the bets on flight cancellations after media reports about the new prediction markets appeared.

Kalshi and similar platforms, such as Polymarket, allow users to place bets on future events—ranging from the results of political elections to the number of music albums sold in a given week. FlightAware states that betting markets related to flights could potentially be used to interfere with flight operations. According to the company’s assessment, this could pose risks to passengers and airport employees.
FlightAware is seeking a jury trial. The lawsuit does not specify the amount of damages the company is seeking. TechCrunch reached out to Kalshi for comment.
