China plans to launch solid-state battery production by 2030 — OilPrice

China plans to begin commercial production of solid-state batteries by 2030, reduce their cost and improve their performance. This was reported by OilPrice, citing a statement by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The ministry said that over the next five years, the new-type battery industry will be in a critically important period of technological renewal. The ministry called for making use of strategic opportunities related to technological and industrial innovation.

Bet on new materials

The plan provides for work on new materials for electrodes, electrolytes and other components of solid-state batteries. The publication notes that electrolytes are currently one of the vulnerable components of this technology. The plan also covers sodium and flow batteries, which are seen as possible alternatives to lithium-ion batteries.

Solid-state batteries may have higher energy density, charge faster, last longer and be safer than lithium-ion batteries. At the same time, their large-scale adoption is hindered by high costs and technical malfunctions that have complicated development for years.

BYD’s plans and market growth

China already dominates the global lithium-ion battery market and seeks to strengthen its position in the next-generation technology segment. BYD has also previously stated its intention to begin mass production of solid-state batteries for electric vehicles by 2030. At the same time, the company plans to continue using lithium-ion batteries as well.

According to Global Times data cited by OilPrice, China’s solid-state battery market amounted to about $42.5 million last year and could grow to $384.8 million by 2030. At the same time, China is already facing excess production capacity in the lithium-ion battery segment for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
