Comedian W. Kamau Bell calls a charger his most essential tool
Comedian, activist, podcast host and author W. Kamau Bell said in a weekly The Verge questionnaire that a charger is his most essential tool. According to him, without charging, electronic devices remain “shiny paperweights.”
Phone and apps
Bell said that he probably uses a mapping app every day. He expressed dissatisfaction that some such apps label the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. If he were setting up a new phone with only basic apps, he would quickly install YouTube.
The comedian also said he would like smartphones to be sold with a durable case and screen protection already included. When writing material for Substack, he can keep up to 30 windows open and closes them only after publishing an article.
Social media and technology
Bell thanked Elon Musk for, in his words, destroying Twitter and helping him overcome his addiction to the platform. He now mainly uses Instagram and Threads because, as a public figure, he needs such platforms. At the same time, Bell noted that his generation had already left MySpace and Friendster behind.

Among the technology trends he would like to see disappear, Bell named artificial intelligence. To concentrate, he chooses coffee and complete silence to listen to YouTube while working. He considers nighttime the best time to work, although he cannot always work then because of his family.
Games and physical media
Bell’s warmest gaming memories are associated with Civilization on PC and NBA Live ’95 on Sega Genesis. He named an afro comb with long metal teeth and a fist-shaped handle as his favorite gadget. What disappointed him most was a brush that, according to the manufacturer, was supposed to effectively comb an afro.
Bell also said that he recently bought Fishbone’s first EP at Mars Records in Oakland. He added that he still needs to buy a record player. In his view, if a person needs a new computer, they should buy one.
