Apple may release two gaming controllers for iPhone under the Beats brand — The Verge

Apple is developing two gaming controllers for the iPhone that will likely be sold under the Beats brand. The Verge reports this, citing Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.

References in macOS code

Rumors about Apple’s possible entry into the gaming controller market had emerged earlier. Last week, MacRumors reported that two references to gaming controllers identified as the company’s own devices were found in the macOS 26.7 code.

Although these references were found in macOS rather than iOS, Gurman says the controllers are intended for the iPhone. According to his information, Beats executives are leading work on the product.

Possible role of Beats

As The Verge notes, Apple sometimes uses its Beats subsidiary brand to experiment with new product categories and compete in the lower-priced segment without changing the positioning of Apple’s core product line. Beats currently sells, among other products, iPhone cases and USB-C cables.

To reach a broad audience, the controller would need to be relatively affordable, which could require abandoning the more expensive materials and finishes typical of Apple products. The Verge also believes that the culture and style associated with gaming controllers may suit the Beats brand.
