Meta has raised the price of its VR headset due to rising memory costs
Meta Platforms Inc. has announced a price increase for its Quest VR devices due to a significant rise in the cost of manufacturing high-performance hardware. The changes will take effect on April 19 and will apply to the U.S., U.K., European, and Japanese markets.
Bloomberg reported this, citing the company’s statement regarding the need to adjust prices to continue supporting the platform’s hardware and software.
The price of the entry-level Quest 3S model will increase by $50, while the higher-end Quest 3 version will go up by $100. From now on, the Quest 3S will start at $350 for the 128GB version, and the Quest 3 at $600. Although smart glasses currently outpace headsets in popularity, Meta remains committed to VR as the future of computing.
Meta CEO and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg has decided to shut down one of the company’s largest and most costly projects—the Horizon Worlds metaverse—which has incurred losses of $80 billion. Support for the VR platform on Quest devices will end by mid-June, and the app will disappear from the app store by the end of March.
As a reminder, the combined wealth of the world’s 500 richest people has shrunk by $208 billion. This happened after President Donald Trump announced the imposition of tariffs, causing global markets to crash.
