Millions of users address chatbots with the words “please” and “thank you,” but recent studies do not provide a clear answer as to whether politeness affects the quality of responses from artificial intelligence.
Some scientific studies suggest that certain language models may respond more accurately or usefully to politely phrased queries. At the same time, other studies have found no noticeable difference between polite and neutral requests.
Experts note that clearly formulating a query is far more important than using words like “please” or “thank you.” It is a clear description of the task, providing the necessary context, and specifying concrete requirements that most significantly influence the quality of an AI’s response.
At the same time, researchers emphasize that polite communication does no harm and can remain a natural part of communication, even when the interlocutor is a chatbot.
