Nvidia is discussing a $250 billion guarantee for OpenAI's data center in Ohio
Nvidia is in talks with OpenAI to secure $250 billion in financing for a data center lease in Pike Township, Ohio. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, according to Al Jazeera English.
The project, with a capacity of 10 gigawatts, is being built by SB Energy, a subsidiary of SoftBank. The facility is located approximately 109 kilometers south of Columbus. The total cost of the project, including chips for the data center, could exceed $500 billion.
Nvidia’s guarantees will cover the lease of the facility but will not include the chips, which are estimated to cost an additional $350 billion. The company, led by Jensen Huang, is also discussing a potential role in financing this equipment. The data center is expected to be able to supply up to 800 megawatts of electricity by 2028—enough to power about 640,000 households.

In June, The Information reported that OpenAI had signed a potential 20-year lease agreement under which it would manage its own equipment and pay for the use of the facility. The U.S. Department of Energy has authorized SoftBank to build the world’s largest AI data center on leased land as part of a public-private partnership.
There are 166 data centers operating in Ohio, with another 57 planned. Having its own infrastructure could expand the capabilities of OpenAI, which currently leases computing power from Amazon, Oracle, and Microsoft.
At the same time, analysts are pointing out the risks of large-scale mutual investments in the field of artificial intelligence. According to Al Jazeera English, OpenAI is operating at a loss, and its partners—which provide data centers, chips, and computing power—had up to $96 billion in debt as of November. Nvidia and OpenAI did not respond to Al Jazeera English’s request for comment.
