Musical Spirograph lets users create generative compositions in a browser

The Musical Spirograph web tool lets users create generative musical compositions using animated geometric shapes in a browser. Points move across the screen according to mathematical equations, forming hypotrochoids and epitrochoids, and pass through concentric rings, each of which triggers a specific note.

Customizing visual patterns

Users can choose one of six virtual rotors and use up to three “arms” that draw shapes at the same time. Other settings for changing the geometric pattern are also available. The Verge reports on how the tool works.

Scales, synthesizers and tempo

Musical Spirograph offers six musical scale options, as well as the ability to customize a set of notes independently. Six synthesizer presets are available for sound. Quantization and tempo in BPM can also be adjusted separately, while the number of rings can be expanded to a range of two octaves.

The article’s author, Terrence O'Brien, noted that the service’s sound engine has limitations: clipping and artifacts are possible. He also drew attention to the lack of MIDI output for controlling other musical instruments.
